A New Beginning

We are now a Union.  Whether you ask for it or not, this is our union, it will be what we make of it. Our union will only be successful through active participation from each and every one of us.  This means going to meetings, listening to issues, and most importantly VOTING. Our union will not become successful over night, it isn’t a miracle cure for anything, and it will take the dedication and effort of every one of us.  Through active participation we have a voice and representation, our union can make a difference, but it is up to each and every one of us to make it happen.  This isn’t just limited to problems but also improvements in both process and working conditions.  We have one of the best jobs in this area.  A lot of people have the idea that they are doing Dana E-town a favor by showing up for work.  This way of thinking has to change.  Dana Corp doesn’t owe us anything, except a safe and healthy environment in which to work.  A major key to our future and success is the continued profitability of Dana E-town.  As team members of Dana E-town and I hope Dana Corp stock holders, we each have a personal interest in the continued profitability of Dana E-town.  A simple step to achieving this is for each of us to change our mind set and thinking.  Instead of seeing ourselves as just team members, we need to start considering our selves as employee/owners.  Take your job seriously; keep in mind items such as production, waste, cost and other items that affect the bottom line.  Consider what you would do if the money were coming out of your pocket.  The little things make a difference.

UNEASY WITH UNIONS

I know some of you are still uneasy with this union, but let’s reflect on where we would be with out unions. First, let’s start with Social Security. I know everyone hates to draw a Social Security check when they reach qualifying age or become disabled. The union got that law put into effect in 1935. Second, it’s a shame that our children have to go to school and get as education instead of going to a sweatshop to a coal mine. Labor union helped put a stop to that in 1939. And, let’s not forget the Equal Pay Act in 1963 that prohibited wage differences for workers based on sex. Or the civil Rights Act in 1964 and the age Discrimination Act in 1968. What about having a safe place to work? Unions helped create OSHA in 1970. Furthermore, I know everyone hates being paid time and half for all hours over 40 a week, and automatic cost of living increase and pension funds guaranteed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of1974. So, if you thought you had it bad now look where we would be without Organized Labor Unions. In closing let’s support our union, attend meetings, get involved.

MAKES YOU THINK

Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA.....

I think we should all step back and take a close look at what we do each day and how we spend our union made dollars. Be American support American jobs.
